Are there any updates to this? For my purposes we are using the NE edition of Zimbra (4.5.6) but anything which would allow bidirectional access to the calendars within Zimbra, without using Outlook, would be brilliant.

UPDATE: Well I believe that I "foot-mouthed" this one. After setting up https://server/home/email_user_name/Calendar/ as an ICS calendar in ThunderBird/Lightning and creating a new event and making certain that it was set to the correct external Zimbra ICS calendar and not the builtin default one, it showed up in Zimbra as one would expect. That being said the same works from Kmail, although you have to also set the "Upload to" path, which is the same as the "Download From" one. I will play with this some more but it appears this is working.

What I have found is that if you create the event in thunderbird, and only access that event through thunderbird calendar (lightning) plugin (not the zimbra web client), the event is updatable and all is grand.

As soon as you access and modify the event using the zimbra web client, the event is no longer updatable from Thunderbird.

Another issue with this is that when you set a notification, it will not stop notifying you. Every time your Lightning syncs with the central calendar you get another notification.

You are also not able to delete the event once you have created it... so the only way to get it to stop is to go to the web portal and delete the event.

If you're using Tbird/Lightning over ical, then you need to mark appointments as Status: Cancelled, not simply just delete them.

If you're using WebDAV, you can delete them from Lightning fine without having to mark their status.
