Default Forwarding

I have setup forwarding on a number of accounts. Forwarding seems to be fine however, all the mail seems to stay in the existing account as well.

Normally forwarding means mail moves on, but is this a bug or a feature? If a feature, is there a choice?

There is an option (on the current developers build that I'm using) that allows you to not keep a local copy of the email. That option is in the users mailbox options/mail settings not the admin console. That's assuming that the user is administering the forwarding, if it's a 'hidden' forward set by the admin a copy still resides in the users mailbox.

I would have to class that as a bug then. All mail systems I have ever used have the option of forwarding, and in every case they literally do that, forward. Just like your postage service, they don't keep a copy of the mail, they just stick it in a new envelope and forward it on.

Otherwise, it is not forwarding, it is "send another copy to" feature.

Definitely a bug.

However, the idea of keeping a copy and sending a copy, is a nice feature. I can't think of an occurence where I would use it yet, but there is probably some really good reasons to keep a second copy - eg: providing a way of archiving important mail AND sending it to a distribution list or something...

So should I now raise this as a bug in Bugzilla?

Yes, file it in bugzilla. Have a quick search to see if there's already anything like this in bugzilla, I couldn't see anything.

I like the feature of "copy and forward", I use it for a backup and folks know it, no exuses like "i never got it". I do set the unattended accounts to delete mail in a fairly short amount of time, with single message store I dont think it will affect storage at all.

Excellent, the bug describes the problem well and I voted for it.

The obvious work around is to create an alias, or a distribution list with one entry. The reality is thought, that I need to be able to create a group of accounts, also for login, calendar etc, but the user wants their mail to all appear in one place (which of course Zimbra is excellent at dealing with multiple accounts in one place).
