Default actions on mass emails

I don't know why this doesn't seem possible. In fact, I've never seen an email client, even the most base, where you couldn't do a 'select all' on a folder, and then delete.

Am I missing something here? Is there no way to do a select all, or a select all on a search, and then do something with the contents?

Essentially, I want to delete all messages from a single mailbox that are before a certain date. Why is this hard?

(note, that I'm just aping my employee's comments)

Okay from the Advanced client, next to the search bar at the top click Advanced, then when the next choices appear click on Date. Select before or after a certain date and when the email messages are shown select the tick box just below the new icon. You can then select all and delete them.

So you can take action on lots of mail items at one time, aka 'select/apply to all results' - vote for these RFE's:
Bug 4175 - Permit the selection of all messages in a folder
Bug 16898 - Delete messages based on a search query (like older than 1yr)
Bug 10317 - Advanced Search Actions (supercedes Filters)
