Default Installing on OS X Client...

The notes that come with the Open Source version of ZCS don't specify whether or not you need OS X Server, as opposed to OS X Client. I just tried a base install on an OS X Client machine running 10.4.5 and the install seemed to take (despite several chunks of java exception) but it's not showing up...

Do I need OS X Server to make this go?

No, but you need java 1.5 as the default - there's info about setting up the symlinks in the forums.

Many thanks Marc, some further searching put me right there, and don't I feel like a fool for skipping a step.

Sorry to bug.
