Changing password requirements

If I go into the admin section and change the password requirements, will it force users when they log in to change their passwords or will it make their passwords not work or what?

Our password requirements are not strict enough due to previous email admins and we carried those over and now we want to change that. I want to make sure I know the best way of doing this before pushing it out to everyone.
