[SOLVED] mta not running correctly

I logged into the zimbra admin interface and saw that the mta wasn't running correctly. So I logged into the server and did zmcontrol status. I saw that the mta indeed wasn't fully working. I followed this by a stop and a start.

When I'm stopping the services, I get this mail in /var/mail/zimbra.

Unable to determine enabled services from ldap.
Enabled services read from cache. Service list may be inaccurate.

When I do zmcontrol start, everything looks fine.

After sitting for a little while, I get this mail in /var/mail/zimbra.

postqueue: fatal: Queue report unavailable - mail system is down

When I do zmcontrol status, I get this:

I got rid of exim4 which seemed to be installed and running.

stop/start still gave me the same issue so I did an upgrade to the same version and got this error during the install

Setting defaults from ldap...done.

What do you get when you telnet localhost 25? Do you have sendmail running as well?

I also tried turning the services off, ./install -u, restart, ./install, restart
still the exact same error.

I ran /opt/zimbra/libexec/zmfixperms just to make sure.

I'm kinda beating my head against the wall here. I have a pfsense router set up with the domain profarius.com. The server is set up to be vindico.profarius.com.

What do you get when you telnet localhost 25? Do you have sendmail running as well?

!SOLUTION!

Apparently exim4 is not easily remove with apt. There were two suggestions pointed out in this post. postfix is not running

update-rc.d -f exim4 remove

or install sysv-rc-conf and remove anything across from exim4.

Apparently removing exim4 doesn't handle the services it binds to. Or something like that.
