You don't have the networking files set up correctly if the system can't determine it's own hostname.

Default hostname

I type hostname and it works !?

should I set up my MX record to have the hostname in it instead of just the domain ?

Thanks Marcman

yeah, but is the value returned by hostname in /etc/hosts?

Are the IPs on your interfaces in /etc/hosts?

Is one of your IPs connected to the hostname returned by the hostname command?

Default No

no
I removed my domain line with the lp device to replace it with the localdomain.localhost line for mysql to work.

Should I enter my hostname in there as well ? I have my mail server behind a firewall that does port forwarding so I guess I should put my internal address and my real hostname and .... ?

Thanks a lot for the help

I can't tell you what values are right for your host.

I can tell you this:

The string that is returned by the hostname command needs to appear in your /etc/hosts file, and it needs to be on a line that starts with an IP address that appears when you run ifconfig -a
