    Question Printing Strange Characters

    Hey everyone,

    I am having a problem where when users print they see unprintable character boxes

    This happens at two different locations with two different computers, the only commonality being FF 3.0.1 and Zimbra 5.0.6_GA_2313.UBUNTU6.

    I found Thread of people with the same problem.

    Any ideas would be helpful.

    Actually, if you look at an ASCII chart, you'll find that 0x20h is the hexadecimal representation of the space character. Take note of the "unprintable" numbers. "00 20" kinds looks familiar AND it's rather strategically placed.

    Why is this happening? I have no clue, but it does appear to be the hexadecimal representation of the character in an ASCII table.

    I had a problem on multiple computers using firefox when printing. The version of Firefox was the latest at the time (about a week ago) and the Printer is an HP Laserjet 8100 series. I fixed it by reinstalling the printer driver.

    -I deleted the old printer driver from the Printers & Faxes window.
    -I installed a new printer driver to LPT1 (even though we are using a network printer).
    -It asked if I wanted to keep the current driver or reinstall, and I chose to reinstall.
    -Once it was installed, I connected to the network printer again (is hosted on a print server) and now it is working fine.

    I had one that did not work fine, but I discovered that the printer driver being given to it by the server was slightly different than the one I reinstalled. So I just changed it to the one I reinstalled.

    Hope that helps. Not sure why it wasn't working in the first place.

    Default FF 3 bug

    Its a firefox 3 bug.
    see Bug 29379 – printing from firefox 3 ( ff3 ) issues

    and https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=426438,

    it appears that the Mozilla people have not even worked on it as its still not assigned to anyone. We had to fallback to FireFox 2 at my site

    Default Thanks

    Thanks guys, I have rolled affected users back to FF2.
    I wish Mozilla would get this cleaned up.

    @k7sle: Yes I know ASCII char 32 (0x20) is space, the issue is why those hex boxes are printed rather than a space.

    Rather than downgrading everyone to FF2, if you can wait and stay with FF3 till the end of this week (/when you can next upgrade) - we worked around the issue in 5.0.9 by using monospace instead of courier Bug 29379 - printing from firefox 3 ( ff3 ) issues

    Thumbs up

    Thanks for the heads up Mike,

    I was looking at scheduling the 5.0.8 update, guess I'll wait another week or so.

    I'm holding off on 5.0.9 & 5.0.10 because of a couple of bugs but wanted to solve this for my ff users.

    Can I simply edit /opt/zimbra/jetty-6.1.5/webapps/zimbra/js/zimbraMail/mail/view/ZmMailMsgView.js and change the line that says

    Code:
                                    html[idx++] = "<span style='font-family: courier'>";
    to

    Code:
                                    html[idx++] = "<span style='font-family: monospace'>";

    Can anyone give a definitive answer on changing this to monospace. If so does it take a restart of the server to go live. Because it doesn't seem to work.
