Question Problem with GAL and the primary mail address

Hi folks,

I have little problem with the Zimbra GAL. First of all I am gonna
describe how I set up our user accounts:

Example user:

Accountname: firstname@zimbra.ourcompany.com
Alias1: lastname@ourcompany.biz
Alias2: lastname@ourcompany.com

The base mail addresses (accountname) are NOT supposed to be used as an
e-mail address at all. Those are in our case just for the login. Our standard domain
is zimbra.ourcompany.com, so the users can login with their firstname, since
the standard domain is attached to the login name.
So far so good, everything works fine.

Our problem is now, that the users are listed with their accountname
(fistname@zimbra.ourcompany.com) in the GAL, e.g. within Outlook. This
confuses our users a lot, so we really need to change this behavior.
What we would like to do is to have the users real mail address shown in
the GAL. This would be lastname@ourcompany.com

I found the attribute "zimbraMailDeliveryAddress" in the Zimbra LDAP
structure and changed it like described above to lastname@ourcompany.com.
This changed the entry in the GAL but the problem was, that after I
changed the attribute (couple of minutes later) I couldn't log in
anymore with firstname@zimbra.ourcompany.com.
It was just possible to login using one of the alias mail addresses.
The LDAP attribute seems to be related somehow to the login.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the mail address shown in the GAL without affecting the userlogin?

Would be glad about an answer

Cheers,

gnatbite

Why not just select the "Hide in GAL" checkbox for the username, but not for the aliases? That checkbox is in the first page of the account or alias properties in the GUI.

Hi dwmtractor,

first of all I would like to thank you for your reply.

This is what I already did. When new users are migrated the users don't appear in the GAL anymore.
For migrated users this doesnt work. Apparently the GAL is downloaded when the user starts his Zimbra Connector the first time with Outlook. But thats not a big deal since the user can delete the GAL manually and we didnt migrate to many users so far. Is there maybe a way to reload the GAL manually?

But still, we really need to have the alias mail addresses listed in the GAL.

I can't find any checkbox to set up that an alias mail address is listed in the GAL. Is there really such a function? I am using Zimbra 5.06 installed on an Ubuntu Dapper Drake Server.

By the way, I already set up an canonical mail address for all users, so that mails are sent with the canonical address, instead of the base mail address.

I'm a little confused. . .don't you have a screen like this under the "Aliases" menu?

Thx for the screenshot. I do have this checkbox but this just affect the main mail address (firstname@zimbra.ourcompany.com). I already hide this addresses from the GAL.
What I would like to do is to put the mail aliases in form of "lastname@ourcompany.com" into the GAL.

Is that somehow possible?

Actually, you can. What you can't do (I just tested) is hide the main address but not hide the alias. That checkbox shows for both, but they are linked--that is if you check (or uncheck) it on the alias, it flows thru to the main address and vice-versa. We may want to file a bug on this. I was applying logic without testing it. . .sorry!
