Default Authenticated LDAP queries only (address book)

Hello.

I have integrated my Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 + Lightning 0.8 with Zimbra. So far, so good. Now it's the turn of the address book. I have opened port 389 in the firewall (the server is in the Internet, not in the LAN), and I have configured the values as per the Mail Client LDAP Configuration wiki entry. It's working fine. So far, so good.

Now the problem is that I can't live like that, given the the server is in the Internet (anonymous access). Only solution would be to allow queries from authenticated users only, as per this entry in the bugzilla (bug #15378).

Now, before altering the OpenLDAP configuration files, which will most probably be overwritten every time I update Zimbra, is there any official solution to this problem that customers in general are using? Also, is there any easy way, perhaps through the administration interface, or console commands, to do this? You know, like the zmtlsctl command that allows easy switching between http and https.

Thanks in advance.
