Default Can Zimbra IM communicate with other XMPP servers?

I have enabled IM on our Zimbra server (zcs-NETWORK-5.0.5_GA_2201.RHEL5_64.20080417022213 on CentOS 5.1) and my users are able to IM each other. I would also like our users to IM employees at another site which uses a generic Jabber server for IM purposes. Can I get the two servers to talk to each other (I realize that the devs disabled interoperability with AIM, Yahoo, etc.)? I hope that my Zimbra server can still communicate with jabberd or jabberd2.

yes it can. just checked out gmail connection recently. you need to do the follwowing:
    - add a SRV (service) Record to your DNS entries containing the follwoing

    _xmpp-server._tcp.yourdomain.com zimbraserver.yourdomain.com

in doing so, google (for example) will be able to find the xmpp server responsible for your domain and therefore you then should be able to talk to those users.
