If you are using the web admin console to do the restore, just check the box to add a prefix to the account name if you don't want to lose the current mailbox. Otherwise, yes that's pretty much how it goes.

What do you mean by improvements for disaster recovery? Are you looking for a roadmap for new features in the backup/restore process?

When I say improvements, I am speaking about the ability to merge backup data with current mailbox without having to restore to separate mailbox (which you have the ability to add a prefix to the name but unable to change what mailbox you are going to restore will be restored to or import into the same name as backed up mailbox name). The ability to restore a backed up mailbox to a different mailbox already on the server (different name than what is backed up as).

So basically something like: Joe left the company and his mailbox was deleted. You now want to restore Joe's mailbox and merge it into Jane's existing mailbox without losing any of Jane's email. Do I understand that correctly?

You're thinking of 'file' logic vs redolog playing logic. However you want to vote for / support ticket tag Bug 8849 - More Granular Restore: per folder & per-message which was originally thought of as just admin side (depending on the type of backup you might have to wait for all the specified backups to play into some temp location and special admin UI to move it to live account). But it also contains a later idea to allow restore into a folder within existing account so the user can sort it out - see comment #8 ie: inject into user/restoreTimeX folder.

There's also Bug 10378 - restore only calendar data (Though a similar one for address books bug 25897 is already duped into bug 8894 so I don't know if bug 10378 is going to be duped or is alone to become a separate command line attribute.)
