Is there a way to tell zimbra to not get all messages?

I am trying to get messages in to a new zimbra account via Pop or IMAP. The mail account has 2500 messages in it and zimbra is giving error messages (i think) because it is timing out from too many messages.

In Gmail, it only gets 200 at a time. Is there a setting like this in zimbra?

I think it might help if I can choose to only take xx messages at a time, or only get todays messages, like on a treo.

any ideas?

Does the log mailbox.log gives you any error message?
