    Cool [SOLVED] Using External LDAP

If I use an external LDAP directory, I assume I still need a local Zimbra account, correct? My assumption is that only the authentication goes against the external LDAP source and then if finds the same user local in OpenLDAP with the same username/email address?

That would also assume you need to create an account in both OpenLDAP and your external LDAP tree separately, correct?

    Thanks!

You can't run Zimbra without the supplied version of LDAP, we do more than just provision users in there. You can use an external LDAP for authentication.

So, the answer to your question is - yes, you need to provision a user in both the Zimbra LDAP and your external Authentication LDAP. There's an RFE in bugzilla for synchronising this function if you'd care to vote on it.

What port is the embedded OpenLDAP instance listening on? I assume you don't provide credentials to allow us to manage that directory?

It's the same port as every other LAP, 389. You can certainly get at the Zimbra LDAP but the best method is to use the Zimbra cli tools or the Admin UI to manage the server. I would strongly advise against making any direct modifications to LDAP as we don't guarantee they will remain after any upgrade.
