Question [SOLVED] View content of deferred mails

    Hi everybody!

    I have the following problem:

When our mail server defers a mail, I normally first notice that in the mail queue in the Administration Console. After that I go to /opt/zimbra/data/postfix/spool/defer and search for the message ID, which shows up in the mail queue (e.g. 13BDBCDAF2). After I found that file I know the reason why this certain mail got deferred.

But sometimes, I am not really sure if I should delete this mail straight away from the mail queue or try to requeue it. That's why I really want to have a look at the content of this mail.

If I am quick, I can see it in /opt/zimbra/data/amavisd/tmp, but after some minutes it disappears and I don't know where it is stored then. I tried to trace it with zmmsgtrace, but I couldn't find anything.

How can I find such an email?

Thank you very much for your help!

    Cheers,
    stefan

Have you checked in the /opt/zimbra/data/postfix/spool/deferred/ directory? I checked ours, and there are messages in there, but the encoding seems to upset my PuTTY session.

Yes I did. But I have the same problem like you have. I cannot really read these files.

Try using cat | less, or more. that atlease filters some of the bin data

Ok, that's a little bit better. Thank you.

But is this the only way to see the content of a deferred mail? How do you guys normally do it when you are not sure if you should requeue or delete it?

This is what I get when using less. Similar to cat, and more is similar but without the special characters.

The majority of our deferred messages are ones sent from our internal users to incorrect spellings of our primary domain (children aged 11-16, despite the ICT teaching, they commonly just guess at the domain part despite it being on all messages sent/received ) so I just delete these.

In other cases I cat/tail/grep the maillogs to try and find out what's going on immediately after I re-queue a message.
