    Default Redundancey in Zimbra

Hi is there a way i can use 2 zimbra servers to act as 1 but with out a load balancer maybe split the function into 1 server for sending mails and the other for receiving mail

You need to define the type of redundancy vs performance you desire as your thread title can be misleading...

Information on number of users, daily mail flow, and hardware w/ avg load is always good as well.

(Several examples pretending you only have 2 servers available/aren't very large.)

    Multi-Server:
(In these examples I'm describing what your asking for, but it's more for performance reasons. Obviously there's a little redundancy, but if you loose server 1 you aren't going to be accessing any mail.)

    Server 1: LDAP/Mailstore/Logger/Aspell
Server 2: MTA/AS/AV for incoming mail processing & outgoing mail handling -point mx record here.
(If you want to test this situation without actually removing the mta service from server 1 yet, change the 'webmail mta' to server 2.)

    OR

Server 1: LDAP/Mailstore/Logger/Aspell/Stats/MTA/AS/AV -Exactly as it is now with all services. Could be a backup 'higher' mx record in case server 2 goes down.
Server 2: MTA/AS/AV - Just incoming to make the load on processing incoming mail for spam. Should server 2 fail you could still email internally.

In both cases you would point your primary 'lower' mx record at server 2.

Become familiar with these documents: /docs/ne/latest/multi_server_install/toc.html

    Redundancy & Clustering:

NE: you can get support for RHEL + RHCS (using RHCM out of that, don't need LVSC) + SAN + Fencing device
    Under construction: Bug 18197 - RHEL5 support for cluster/RHCS

FOSS: [SOLVED] Zimbra on DRBD not the only method but DRBD & Heartbeat seem to be the favorite around here.

Cold: How to: cold standby server (no cluster)

There's also: Scripts to sync to a remote Zimbra backup machine - Zimbra :: Wiki

Vote on: Bug 11423 - disaster recovery through server to server sync (beta)

http://www.zimbra.com/forums/announc...html#post62754 so we know your version / NE or FOSS so we know what options to present you.

    Hi
well first of all my mail server is extremely slow and times out very often with clients complaining but the server itself it fast and stable so i have check and i believe my best option is to get another mail server and so both of them will act as one mail server
first question do i need a different license for that or the same also is there any thing special i must do to get it working or it just normal mx higher or lower entry will be fine
also what i what is either of two things
    1. mail incoming to server 1 and out going on server 2
    or
    2. mail incoming and outgoing on both depending on how busy one is

At this stage you would be better addressing the problems of performance rather than trying to build a multi-server installation. How about some specifications of your hardware (CPU, RAM & HD configuration) and LAN plus the Zimbra version/release.

That should be enough for a Zimbra server but the performance should be better than you are describing. Is this still running on RHEL? It's not in a VM is it? Does the Zimbra server have KDE or Gnome installed? If it does, what is the response time when you login using a browser on the server? I assume this is a single NIC in the server? Is it a gigabit NIC, which make/model is it? Does it have full duplex set? Are there any TCP offload setting you can apply to the NIC and have you done them?

Is the firewall and SELinux disabled on this server? Is the server on a LAN and do you have a local DNS server installed? Is there any router between the server and the client machines?

Are you getting any error messages in the ZImbra log files that might indicate any connection problems. Does Zimbra become more responsive when you reboot the server?

How many users on this server and is it NE or OSS version?
    Regards

    Bill

first of all its not running in VMware and it is running RHEL i dont have kde or Gnome only whats needed for the web interface and it is very slow as well when you login to the web interface
1 NIC card gigabit but full duplex is not enabled and i dont know what you mean by TCP offload setting
no firewall or selinux it is in a server farm and uses the dns server of the farm there is a router just before you hit the server
there is no errors in the log files and it responds faster when i reboot which i have only done once in a long time

do you mean it is set to auto or it is actually running half duplex ? If fixed at half duplex the question will be why ? can you post the output from a 'top', free and df aswell.

I'd also suggest you post the output of the following commands:

    Code:
host `hostname` <-- type as-is with backticks not single quotes
    dig yourdomain.com mx
    dig yourdomain.com any
What make/model is the NIC? If it's not RHEL, which operating system is it? Is this the OSS version or NE version of Zimbra?
    Regards

    Bill
