Default Safe to exclude these directories from backup?

When I shut down Zimbra and tar /opt/zimbra to tape, I get this output:

    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/local: socket ignored
    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/cyrus: socket ignored

    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/virtual: socket ignored
    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/old-cyrus: socket ignored
    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/relay: socket ignored
    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/anvil: socket ignored
    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/bounce: socket ignored
    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/discard: socket ignored
    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/scache: socket ignored
    tar: ./opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.5/spool/private/defer: socket ignored

May I safely --exclude the /private/ and /public. dirs from the tar backup? I'll perform a ground up restore from tape to test; just thought I'd ask for some advice..

    TIA
    -John

Are you sure postfix is shut down? Not sure why those directories are giving you trouble.
Looking for new beta users -> Co-Founder of Acompli. Previously worked at Zimbra (and Yahoo! & VMware) since 2005.

    Default tar

There's a tar option (not sure what it is) to grab sockets (named pipes) properly.

These sockets still exist after a service zimbra stop. As a test, on a test box I did:

    service zimbra stop
find -type s | grep zimbra (these files still exist)
    rm -f `find -type s | grep zimbra`
find -type s | grep zimbra (yep, they're really gone)
    service zimbra start
service zimbra status (all is normal)
find -type s | grep zimbra (sockets are recreated as expected)

I am still going to test with a bare metal restore but it seems safe to exclude them from the backup. I'm just enumerating these sockets and appending them to my tar --exclude-from file at backup time.
