Default SMTP Authentication fail Intermittent

Hi, we seem to encounter smtp authentication failure intermittently, does anyone have any ideas on where to look to solve this issue?
Running Release 4.5.5_GA_838.FC5_20070503175107 FC5 FOSS edition
I used xxxxx to replace hostname, email account, domain, and connection details.
Below are the logs when smtp authentication fails

Apr 16 10:33:42 xxxxx saslauthd[18542]: auth_zimbra: xxxxx auth failed: curl_easy_perform: error(28): Operation timed out after 45 seconds with 0 bytes received
Apr 16 10:33:42 xxxxx saslauthd[18542]: do_auth : auth failure: [user=xxxxx] [service=smtp] [realm=xxxxx] [mech=zimbra] [reason=Unknown]
Apr 16 10:33:42 zimbra2 postfix/smtpd[29287]: warning: xxxxx[xxxxx]: SASL LOGIN authentication failed

Apr 16 10:33:53 xxxxx saslauthd[18592]: auth_zimbra: xxxxx auth failed: curl_easy_perform: error(28): Operation timed out after 45 seconds with 0 bytes received
Apr 16 10:33:53 xxxxx saslauthd[18592]: do_auth : auth failure: [user=xxxxx] [service=smtp] [realm=xxxxx] [mech=zimbra] [reason=Unknown]
Apr 16 10:33:53 postfix/smtpd[20685]: warning: xxxxx[xxxxx]: SASL LOGIN authentication failed
SMTP Authentication Passed after 10+minutes later
Apr 16 10:46:03 xxxxx saslauthd[18590]: auth_zimbra: xxxxx auth OK

Thanks.

Is it a multiserver install ? If yes then check connectivity between your mailstore and MTA's

yes it is.

In this instance, the mta and mailstore are on the same network connected to the same switch...
