Incoming mail issues

Hello,
I have recently installed Zimbra on a machine running Fedora core 7 and am unable to receive mail from external hosts. When I try to send an email to my Zimbra box from my gmail account the /var/log/zimbra.log gives the following:

Feb 27 12:54:06 mail postfix/smtpd[8960]: connect from ti-out-0910.google.com[209.85.142.184]
Feb 27 12:54:07 mail postfix/smtpd[8960]: lost connection after CONNECT from ti-out-0910.google.com[209.85.142.184]
Feb 27 12:54:07 mail postfix/smtpd[8960]: disconnect from ti-out-0910.google.com[209.85.142.184]

It looks like the sender cannot make a connection even though port 25 is open and listening.

Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

If you're behind a NAT router you need a Split DNS set-up plus a correct /etc/hosts file and you also need to have 'Enable DNS lookups' checked in the Admin UI.

Enable DNS lookups is checked, and the box has its own public IP. What should be in my hosts file? It currently only has 2 entries:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6

Does the fact that the machine has 2 interfaces with different addresses mean I need to setup a split DNS?

Your hosts file is incorrect, check the documentation for the correct format:

Why do you have two NICs with different IPs?

My hosts file now reads:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
64.179.21.218 mail.sedonaresearch.com mail

Is that better? I have 2 NICs because one is for the internal LAN, and one is the public address. The LAN already has a mail server on it so I needed a public connection to make a new domain. Is this part of my problem? The LAN connection is not vital and can be shut down if need be.

Yes, disable the LAN NIC on this server and reboot it and see how you get on with that. There's an outstanding RFE for binding Zimbra to one IP if you wish to vote on it.

I rum two NIC's, LAN and WAN, on both my Zimbra servers. My hosts file lists both addresses resolving to the FQDN of my server.

I've never seen a LAN and WAN resolve to two different domains. Use the same domain on both sides and simply rename the host to mail1 or something else other than the other mail server running on your LAN. Be sure and change your DNS records, both MX and A record after changing the name of your external mail server.

One other long shot - I had a bad NIC cause a timeout error with a different mail server I used to run. Hardware issues are something that can't be overlooked in the troubleshooting.

Thanks for all the help, I got it working this morning. Turns out I just had the default gateway for my WAN card set wrong.
