    Default Thunderbird/Lightning: CalDAV vs. ICS

Now that Zimbra 5.0 supports CalDAV, is there any functional difference if one configures Lightning for CalDAV rather than ICS?

More generally, if you have a choice of one or the other, is there a best practice recommendation?

    Thanks.

I'm also wondering the same thing, so I'm replying to hopefully get this floated up top and an opinion from someone.

isn't the main difference that ics is a protocol for read-only subscribing to a calendar, while caldav is a read/write calendar sharing protocol?

I don't know the technical differences. I can tell you I have been using the CalDAV functionality of version 6.0.x from Thunderbird/Lightening very successfully.

There is a major gotcha to watch out for though. Lightening does not prompt for an updated password if authentication fails - it simply tells you there is a problem (and the Error Console suggests it is just temporary.) See

    for details.

The major difference for me is functionally - ICS works great until you try and delete an appointment - it only deletes locally, so when the calendar reloads, it "comes back".

CalDAV does not have this issue.
