Default Using Zimbra's LDAP to provide authentication for other services

Hi,
Just got my zimbra installtion up and running, and I must say I am very pleased and impressed. I can't wait to put this server into production. Quick question though.. with a hopefully simple answer.

I know that it is possible to have zimbra use an external LDAP server for its own authentication... which is great for integrating zimbra into an existing system. My company (which currently does not use any directory services or centralized authentication) is moving to a new location in several weeks, so I have the opportunity to basically design the new network from the ground up... and I would like to use an LDAP server to authenticate users on an Apache server and at Windows / Linux / MacOS login.

Is it possible to use Zimbra's existing LDAP server to acocmplish this, with only having to create one user account in Zimbra (or zmprov)? What modifications will I need to make, if any?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Pete

Yes that should work. Depends on what exactly you'll need to authenicate against. Some programs may need custom attr added to each user account. If they can be customized to just need a password that would be best.

no mods are needed, its still just and ldap server,
if you want to integrate sudo, or ssh authentication then mods are needed. but for user/passwd authentication none.

Hi riegersteve,
I plan to implement all my servers run some other services using Zimbra LDAP server as centralize repository for storing user information, like what the one who opened this topic want to do.

Can you give me some information how can I do that?

Thank you!

There are answers all over the forums and wiki for this question, have you searched? What have you tried so far and what were the results?
