Default Updated software?

i just tried to compile latest CRAY branch with updated third party packages by changing various files here and there. got about halfway there and gave up eventually.

some of the third party software is several versions old, and could be considered obsolete or dangerous depending on the reasons for patch releases. i know that stability is king rather than always running the latest and greatest, but what is the zimbra policy for updating third party versions? some of the version numbers are buried pretty deep in the build process, despite the existence of generic symlinks. is zimbra interested in patches to try and remove the version specific code, or in updated versions?
