    Default Too many open files

    It is now more than one month that quite often, especially on nights and weekends, Zimbra crashes, just starting from the tomcat service and catalina.out reports either:
    *** acceptSocket
    GRAVE: Endpoint [SSL: ServerSocket[addr=,port=0,localport=7071]] ignored exception: Too many open files

    *** acceptSocket
    GRAVE: Endpoint [SSL: ServerSocket[addr=,port=0,localport=443]] ignored exception: Too many open files

    Does any one knows a fix to this? We are really getting mad and the users getting very very angry and continuously ask for a mail software change...

    Welcome to the forums,

    Could you run zmcontrol -v and paste your output? -thanks (you can put it in your forum profile as well for easier reference)

    post the output of these commands:

    sysctl -a |grep 'fs.file'
    grep zimbra /etc/security/limits.conf

    the sysctl command returns the total number of filehandles available to the system. if you do:
    lsof |grep zim |wc -l
    it will give you a crude estimate of how many processes zimbra is running (it also runs some commands as root/other users so not exactly accurate)

    also you don't say what os you're running

    Thanks in advance for your help.

    $ uname -a

    Linux #3 SMP Wed Jun 6 18:43:02CEST 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

    $ zmcontrol -v

    Release 4.5.10_GA_1575.FC5_20071117095155 FC5 FOSS edition

    $ lsof | grep zim | wc -l

    $ cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr
    5928 0 295562

    $ sysctl -a |grep 'fs.file'
    fs.file-max = 295562
    fs.file-nr = 5872 0 295562

    $ lsof | grep zim | wc -l

    $ lsof | grep zim | wc -l

    and in the file /etc/security/limits.conf we have:

    zimbra soft nofile 10000
    zimbra hard nofile 10000
