    Default Charter.net

    I'm running a small email server and I cannot send email to anyone at charter.net.

    I can telnet to ib1.charter.net and the connection times out.

    telnet: connect to address 216.33.127.20: Connection timed out
    telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out

    All my attempts to send mail to charter time out and go to deferred status.

    To rule out whether it's your network or your server, you might try telnetting from another machine on your network. I just tried from a cygwin client on my machine and ib1.charter.net answers.

    Since you're clearly resolving the name to the ip address (my machine resolves the same address), I would check firewall ports next. For example--can you ping that address? If you connect outside your firewall can you telnet?

    In other words it looks to me like a networking issue, not a Zimbra one.

    I believe that Charter block port 25 and I would assume that's true for sending to other charter.net addresses. You'll need to relay your mail through the charte mail servers.

    They didn't when I tried yesterday. Telnetted directly to the server that stucker had referenced in his post and did a helo command; it went right in.

    Ah well, another wonderful theory shot down in flames!

    I must have been looking at an old post when they said they blocked port 25.
