Not being a DBA, any tips on how to determine the cause of a mysql.server (mailbox) crash?

Server was running fine and just went down. Cluster attempted an auto-recovery, but couldn't restart mysql.server. I wound up having to recover the DB (at least the wiki was pretty much spot-on).

Clues?
