Thumbs up backups using rsync perl script.

used the zimbraColdBackup.pl to do my nightly backups, modified it slightly to rsync against the same backup so its quicker, and then taring up the backup.

my zimbra is now only down for just less then 100 secs, for a 7GB backup.
I can live with that - Thanks for all your help.

Would you mind putting your version of the script on the wiki for others to use?

FWIW - I'm using rsnapshot to do remote snaps of my zimbra FOSS install. It works just fine although I have not yet tried to do a restore. The one thing is that currently its not shutting down zimbra first before it does the sync. rsnapshot is scriptable so it should be easy enough to execute a script on the remote backup server to first shut down ZCS, then run the sync, then fire it back up.

I use rsnapshot to backup all my other linux machines and it works great.

Exclamation Vote on FOSS hot backups

Anyone interested in this thread should bop on over to a poll started by Zimbra and weigh in on their proposal:

Default Adapted LVM backup script for Retrospect software.

If you use Retrospect Server Backup software with Retrospect Clients to backup machines on your network, you can use this adapted LVM backup script to backup your ZCS install. The nice thing about this script is it is initiated by the Backup server, but it will execute a script before and after the Retrospect backup. So, Retrospect will initiate the snapshot before, and remove it after the backup is executed on the snapshot.

Downtime is minimal, performance is great, backups are automated and incremental.
