    try out zimbra desktop! http://www.zimbra.com/products/desktop.html
(still in alpha though -no cal or documents yet)

ajax client of Zimbra is able to save locally mails
    Like make archives?:
    http:/zimbra.domain.org/zimbra/user/name/inbox.zip (or another folder name)
Wait a second for it to compress, and it will return .eml copies of mail in that folder in a zip (great for throwing on a cd/other storage location and archiving).
You should be able to read them with any standard text reader if need be.
