got same problem (but within a debian4-vserver in a gentoo-box) and still can't figure out.
one thing that wasn't mentioned before was, that there is a error message about the mx record:

MX: mydomain.com (1.2.3.4)
Interface: 192.168.0.13

1.2.3.4
DNS ERROR - none of the MX records for mydomain.com
resolve to this host

the content of my hosts file in the vserver is:
192.168.0.13 localhost mydomain.com
1.2.3.4 mydomain.com
