As look hand it I reinstalled my server a couple of weeks ago to move away from Gentoo. And I copied the whole of /opt/zimbra to my laptop!
So I have copied back across the localconfig.xml, checked the paths, and it was the RC2 version. I am now back where I can run the upgrade again. I have removed the alock as SLAPD fell over.
I *think* I have now fixed the Scalar issue by running :-

perl -MCPAN -e shell
force install Scalar::Util
so that XS support is compiled in. Here goes again !
