it is possible to
- export user settings from an existing LDAP server in order to populate the Zimbra server (necessary because users must exist in the Zimbra server even if they will be authenticated through an external server)
- use an external LDAP server for authentication and GAL
so yes Zimbra can read/import such addresses
but no Zimbra cannot edit/add email-addresses stored on an external LDAP server
