The beta1 for Ubuntu 6 installed fine on Etch for me. All I had to do was modify /etc/debian_release and make one small change to util/utilfunc.sh. Same for Beta2. Trivial, really. While it would be nice to have a "official" version for Debian 4.0, it certainly isn't necessary.
