Well this time it stopped at a different time -- still at night time though, so a time when no one is on the system.
This is the last entry in the tomcat access logs:

So what's at the other end of that /service/post/ request. Incidentally they are coming from the same machine zimbra is on; so its an admin process whatever it is.
Memory wise 1.5GB on the machine and people are using the basic webmail interface, not the fully blown (slow) fancy one.
