Okay I figured out my problem......
turns out that you cannot have a imap and pop3 proxy service configured on a single zimbra server......I had the imap and pop3 proxy ports configured in the admin panel.....so I just blanked out the port numbers for the imap and pop3 server ports and voila....all is well after a zimbra restart.....
