Network Edition Disaster Recovery - Zimbra :: Wiki

The link mentioned by you moves the server by rsync-ing the data. This would be easy and there's not much to do wrong.

But I don't want to do this because I want a clean, fresh installation for the new server.

The old one underwent already may be a dozen updates during the last more than 24 months and each of the updates left a plethora of old files and directories in the Zimbra tree. I dare not to delete them as I cannot be sure they are really unused. So to get rid of the obsolete stuff I want to do a clean install by restoring the server from backup.

And I'm not entirely sure whether I will run into some architecture problems (32 vs 64Bit) with rsync-ing: the old server is a Mac Mini under 10.4 Workstation, while the new one is an XServe under 10.4 server.

Third reason is to really do a Disaster recovery and to be sure
a) how it works and
b) the backups are actually sufficient for a complete restore.
c) to have a proven step-by-step checklist documented

I do this for every kind of server or appliance - I want to know my stuff - but I didn't had the time yet to do this with the mail server.
