Okay have found the solution
It is due to inheritance ... Go back into the Admin GUI and on the newly created CoS allow Calendar again. Scroll down to the calendar section and un-select Group Calendar. Once that is done un-select Calendar under main features. Save the CoS and for the assigned user log out and back in again
