Zimlets are great, they allow developers to integrate our mail UI with all kinds of third party web services and APIs. But what about integrating third party management consoles with Zimbra Admin UI? In version 5 Zimbra Admin UI is an open platform that allows developers to integrate ZCS Admin UI with other management consoles and add new features through admin extensions. Continue reading...

When Zimbra started out we had only a few thousand lines of JavaScript
and didn't really optimize our JavaScript at all. As we added
features to the Zimbra Web Client, the code base grew pretty fast. On
the client/end user side, raw Javascript in hundreds of script tags
were received. This came out to be about 2MB of raw/uncompressed
JavaScript, in about 75 files. Continue reading...

Zimbra gets invited to many events and conferences each year. Starting with our first public appearances at Linux World and Web 2.0 in late 2005. We now attend or speak at several conferences and events each month. Next week is quite busy. So much so that many cubes in Zimbra will be empty next week as folks head out to meet with our current and prospective customers.

Three posts in the same day may be a Zimbra Blog record. Just had to post this. Ignoring all the buzz of Zimbra Desktop over the past 24hrs, Roland has been heads down adding calendar support to the Zimbra Lite client (JSP/HTML based for old computers, slow networks, and ancient browsers). He owes us a post on the Zimbra Lite architecture so I won't steal his thunder. However he sent this screen shot. Continue reading...

Last night we launched Zimbra Desktop. Same AJAX interface you've been using on the web you can now take with you on a trip be it plane, train or auto. It's even nice for those times your trusty network fails you. Today it supports Mail and Contacts, but Calendar, Documents, and other collaboration features will be coming soon.
This week at E-tech Satish will giving a keynote centered around offline webapps on Tuesday. The following day I'll be digging in deeper to the architecture of Zimbra Desktop with this talk. Some of our arch decisions were covered in the comments of the Zimbra Offline post. As always you can comment or discuss Zimbra and our new Desktop release on the Zimbra Forums.

ZCS 4.0.3 includes fixes for 55 bugs and enhancements. It has significant improvements in calendar behavior and fixes a bug in Trash folder viewing that was troubling many folks. It also includes upgrade speed improvements. This allows the upgrade to take much better advantage of installs that have multiple disks available to MySQL.

We released Zimbra 4.0.2 today and there were a few extras that came along for the ride. First off the Fedora Core 5 build is now GA. We also added a new developer/preview release on Ubuntu. This has been a popular hack in our forums for sometime.
Here's a sample of some of the other changes/fixes in 4.0.2:
- perf improvements for IMAP (new MySQL indexes)
- > 2GB support in the Zimbra Outlook Connector
- i18n and some l10n for the Zimbra Outlook Connector
- disabling AS/AV causes mail deferral
- cursor fails to appear in Firefox
- mailbox quota page does not contain any entries
- several all day event and timezone bugs fixed

Owen our UI and CSS guru has been hard at work the last couple weeks revamping our UI skin framework. In the next release it's trivial to define a color palette and generate the CSS required to re-skin or re-color Zimbra. As part of this the basic skins that ship with Zimbra require little or no images to create the layout. Initial tests have shown that Zimbra actually performs slightly faster since it doesn't need to load/render images for all the round corners and UI effects. Two of the new skins that will ship with ZCS 3.2 are 'Sand' and 'Sky'.
Got a skin or color set you'd like to see in the next release. Add a comment with some colors and a name and it may be the newest Zimbra skin!

A little belated but with the recent release of Zimbra's 3.1 Collaboration Suite the Outlook Connector has reached General Availability. We've put together a short whitepaper which details the advantages of Zimbra's Connector for Outlook (ZCO).
- True synchronization and quick offline switching. ZCO syncs in the background and doesn't require any extra steps to go offline.
- Completely asynchronous user interaction. No delays or pauses as user's interact with Outlook.
- Native standards based security, and compatibility using SOAP/XML over HTTP/HTTPS

Been quiet here on the blog, but quite the opposite here inside Zimbra. We opened up CVS for those who want to live on the edge. We've also released the first beta of our Outlook Connector. Those of you trying the new Outlook support you can comment and discuss it here.
Today we also posted our first developer builds. Perfect for those of you who want to use or test as-it-happens intermediate fixes and features. You'll now get to test with us. We plan to post developer builds approximately once a week. These builds are the same builds that we are running internally at Zimbra (ie our @zimbra.com email addresses). So they are good enough to *use* where use is a *very* loose term. These builds are great if you want to check on that recently fixed bug or get a preview of what's coming next. We look forward to your feedback in the developer forum.
