Zimbra Helps Organizations Meet Compliance Requirements with Robust Archiving and Ajax-based Discovery Solution

SAN MATEO, Calif., July 11 -- Zimbra, the leader in open source, next-generation collaboration and messaging software, today announced the launch of Zimbra Archiving & Discovery. Available as an optional licensed add-on to Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS), Zimbra Archiving & Discovery provides administrators with a robust, scalable solution to archive email messages and an easy-to-use, Ajax-based interface to quickly search and 'discover' messages across any subset of mailboxes. It also provides significantly lower licensing and total-cost-of-ownership than existing traditional solutions. By integrating Archiving & Discovery into the ZCS platform, organizations can now leverage Zimbra's tools and popular Ajax-based administrative web-client, greatly reducing the burden of implementing retention, discovery, and regulatory compliance. Additionally, ZCS with integrated Archiving & Discovery enables hosting providers that leverage a software as a service (SaaS), multi-tenant architetture to offer their customers a secure, feature rich archiving solution that provides a compelling total cost of ownership (TCO) and efficient storage options.

"Our customers are K-12 school districts that are under the gun to establish policies to comply with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) amendment that will be widely enforced come December 1, 2007," said Kris Kenyon, Service Manager of "The FRCP amendment stipulates that K-12 schools must ensure their electronic documents, email and instant messages are in compliance with new federal e-discovery regulations. ZCS with integrated Archiving allows us to offer our customers a powerful, and complete messaging solution for retaining and discovering electronically stored information. With Zimbra, they will be able to dramatically reduce their risk for potential litigation or expensive legal fees associated with e-discovery."

Zimbra Archiving & Discovery Key Highlights:

  • Authorized administrative access allows archiving to easily be set up 4for selected users.
  • Archiving expands message envelope and indexes headers, message content and attachments for fast and easy discovery that cannot be impacted by updates to the end-user mailbox or changing membership of mailing lists.
  • Innovative Ajax-based administrator user interface for very high-performance visual cross-mailbox and cross-folders search. Searches can easily be applied against any subset of mailboxes.
  • Advanced Search offers a visual search builder to easily create complex queries. Senders, recipients, dates, attachment types, content, etc. can be used as criteria for discovery.
  • Search inside attachments - over 200 recognized and indexed attachments supported.
  • New discovery mailbox is provisioned with results-set based on search query. Discovery mailbox can directly be shared with appropriate legal personnel without sharing access to any information that did not match the discovery criteria.
  • Hierarchical storage management (HSM) and automated content aging for reduced total cost of ownership (older data stored on cheaper media).
  • Automatic enforcement of aged-based retention policies for archived content (delete on expiration).
  • Stores only a single archive copy of messages bound for multiple recipients on same server.
  • Leverage Tags, Flags, and Conversation views to easily manage messages in the discovery mailbox.
  • Provides end-users and administrators tools to migrate user-archived messages to the archive mailboxes.
  • Zimbra Archiving can be fully integrated with ZCS or with independent messaging servers such as Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, and Novell GroupWise.

"Organizations require a collaboration solution that addresses today's email management challenges- regulatory compliance, legal discovery, information backup and recovery," said Satish Dharmaraj, CEO of Zimbra. "With these challenges in mind, we took a fresh look at archiving, and are excited to offer a solution that brings the same level of innovation and cost savings that we have brought to the email market."

In addition to Zimbra Archiving & Discovery, Zimbra Collaboration Suite also features integrated anti-spam and anti-virus support for a comprehensive, scalable and secure messaging and collaboration solution.
